“People’s Republic of Desire” film screening
As an entire generation has come of age on social media, virtual relationships are slowly replacing real-life human connections, and China has taken it to an extreme. In China, live streaming has become the most popular online entertainment for hundreds of millions. “People’s Republic of Desire” provides a vérité journey into this digital universe, where young performers earn as much as $150,000 a month singing, dancing or doing talk shows to live, interactive audiences of tens of thousands. “People’s Republic of Desire” won the Grand Jury Award at the 2018 SXSW and have screened at more than 30 film festivals worldwide. Variety calls the film “provocative and unsettling.”
Wu was originally trained as a molecular biologist before focusing on filmmaking. He held various management positions at technology companies including Excite@Home and Alibaba. From 2008-2011, he was the China Country Manager for TripAdvisor, the largest travel website in the world.
Wu’s first feature documentary, “Beijing or Bust,” was shown on PBS. His second film, “The Road to Fame,” has broadcasted in more than 10 countries and generated two million online streaming views in China. The film won the Grand Jury Award and Best Editing Award at the 2014 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. He also produced “Nowhere to Call Home,” which The New York Times said inspired dialogue about China.
