Submissions

Study the South exists to encourage interdisciplinary academic thought and discourse on the culture of the American South. The editorial staff welcomes faculty members and graduate students doing work in the fields of history, anthropology, sociology, music, literature, documentary studies, gender studies, religion, geography, media studies, race studies, ethnicity, folklife, and art to submit article abstracts or complete manuscripts. Final manuscripts and projects must attempt to build upon and expand the understanding of the American South in order to be considered for publication.

A submission will not be considered if it has been previously published or is concurrently under consideration by another journal or press. Copyright for essays published in Study the South is retained by the authors.

If you are interested in submitting materials to Study the South, please e-mail a completed manuscript as a Word document or PDF, along with any available illustrations, graphics, or audio, to editor James G. Thomas, Jr. at jgthomas@olemiss.edu.

Peer Review Process

Study the South is a peer-reviewed online academic journal. Once manuscripts are selected for further consideration, they undergo a rigorous double-blind review with two referees in relevant fields, as selected by the editorial staff or editorial board. Reviewers will evaluate the article’s originality, methods, research, response to current literature, argument, and conclusions.

Reviewers may choose to accept, reject, or accept the submission with revisions. If reviewers conclude that revisions are necessary, the author may be asked to respond to reviewers’ questions before final acceptance for publication. An editor will conduct correspondence between reviewers and author.
