On Thursday, October 14 at 12:15pm in Barnard Observatory, SST alum and former SFA Oral Historian Amy C. Evans will discuss her work as a teaching artist with Literacy through Photography, a nonprofit that places artists in classrooms around the Houston Independent School District. Her work is currently on display in the Center’s Gammill Gallery, which is open to the public Monday – Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Edward L. Ayers of the University of Richmond was our 2016 Gilder-Jordan Lecturer on Wednesday, September 7. The Gilder-Jordan lecturer spends the day with faculty and students from the Center and History Department before delivering the evening lecture.
Documentary work will be the theme of the Brown Bag Lecture for Wednesday, Sept. 14 at noon in Barnard Observatory. Several faculty and staff members of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture will discuss documentary photography, film, oral history, and audio recording and show examples of their work and teaching. Participants will include Becca Walton (Mississippi Stories), Rex Jones and Andy Harper (Southern Documentary Project), Sara Wood (Southern Foodways Alliance), and David Wharton (director, documentary studies).
The Gilder-Jordan Lecture in Southern Cultural History will take place at 7pm on Wednesday, September 7 in Nutt Auditorium on the UM campus. The 2016 lecturer is Edward L.
