Brittany M. Brown

Brittany Brown is pursuing an M.A. in Southern Studies with an emphasis in documentary. The Chicago-born, Mississippi-raised journalist graduated from the University of Mississippi with a B.A. in Journalism. During her undergraduate career, Brittany interned for The Baltimore Sun newspaper as a breaking news reporter, participated in the Carnegie-Knight News21 Fellowship reporting on hate crimes and intolerance in the U.S., and traveled to Puerto Rico to report on the long-term effects of Hurricane Maria. These experiences sparked her current research interests, which include oral history, race and ethnicity in the South, and documenting the experiences of Black and Latino Southerners. Brown is the first recipient of Mississippi Today’s Emerging Reporter Fellowship, which aims to promote diversity in journalism by helping to create a pipeline of young investigative reporters of color who want to stay and work in Mississippi.
