From Selma to MontgomeryMany, including several of our Southern Studies students and alumni, traveled to Selma, Alabama earlier this month to be part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march.  We hope to share their stories and photos on the blog soon.  In the meantime,we recommend From Selma to Montgomery: The Long March to Freedom by Southern Studies and Sociology professor Dr. Barbara Harris Combs.

The book, which came out in 2013, explores the marches as historical events within the civil rights movement but also raises questions about civil unrest and voting rights, topics at the center of public discourse now.
